KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — Malaysian rapper Namewee has been charged with drug use and possession following his arrest last month, police confirmed today. This confirmation comes after he publicly denied any involvement in drug use related to the ongoing investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, also known as the 'Nurse Goddess'.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus revealed that the 41-year-old, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was arrested at a hotel on October 22. During the arrest, officers found nine pills suspected to be ecstasy. Furthermore, Wee tested positive for a cocktail of drugs, including amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC.
Fadil stated, 'On October 24, he was charged with two offenses under Sections 39A(1) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act for possession and use of drugs.' The possession charge carries a penalty of up to five years in jail and nine strokes of the rotan upon conviction. The drug use charge provides for a maximum two-year jail term or a fine of up to RM5,000.
Wee pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released on bail of RM4,000 for each charge. The case is set for mention on December 18.
Yesterday, Namewee denied the drug allegations after they emerged in Chinese vernacular media, expressing his frustration with false news reports and public speculation. According to Sin Chew Daily, Hsieh was found dead in a hotel bathtub on October 30 while filming a video project with Namewee.
